Oom Botha

One year ago, we lost two important members of our family. …one lost we expected…the other came so suddenly that it shocked us.  And we are still struggling to find our feet and trying to learn how to live without him. On 19 May 2016 my grandmother, Ouma Trudie, passed away. One year ago on 27 May 2016 we lost my uncle, Oom Botha. Oom Botha was my mothers’ youngest brother.  He grew up on the family farm “Groenfontein” in the Eastern Cape.  From a young age he was interested in farming and took over the family farm.  He was very successful with his farming but it took hard work. My Uncle was married and he had three children. Growing up we saw Oom Botha and his family regularly.  We visited the farm at least once a  year.  I have so many memories from this time: ·          Swimming in the cement dam and later the pool ·          Riding horses while sitting...

One year ago on 19 May 2016 we lost my grandmother, Ouma Trudie. My grandmother was born on 6 October 1923.  She lived with her parents, brother and sister in Calitzdorp .  From the stories she told us it seemed she had a great childhood.  She went to study for a gym teacher and once again she had great stories. Unfortunately I never wrote them down and now I cannot remember the details.  She got married to my grandfather and they lived in Summerset East  and later moved to the family farm “Groenfontein ” .  Soon they had a son but at about 18 months old he passed away.  They then had three more children… my mother and her two brothers.  In October 1979 her husband, my grandfather, passed away. 1. ...

Year in review : 2014

I can not believe that the time flies so fast. We are again in the middle of January. I have neglected the blog in 2014 (Only 2 posts). I hope that there will be more time to travel and more blog posts in 2015. Here is a summary of the things that happened in my 2014 year: I actually have to start at the end of 2013. In November 2013 w e found out   I was pregnant and was very excited. In December, however, I encountered some problems and was placed  on bed rest  for 3 weeks . So our plans for a Christmas break in Cape Town was cancelled and we had a quiet time had at home. The 2014 year started good.  I was feeling better and we even went on a day trip to Herbertsdale and Van Wyksdorp.   January 2014 - Van Wyksdorp NG Church February and March were quiet months. We started to prepare the baby's room. We also fixed the apartment at our house to rent out. But during this time my husband started suffering from a sore and stiff upper body, especi...

Quick update

Hello everyone Live has been very busy the last few months and blogging and traveling had to take the back seat for a while.   There are two main reasons for this – One good the other not: 1)      I am pregnant and expecting our baby in July and we have been busy planning and getting ready. 2)      My husband was diagnosed with cancer and he is busy getting treatment for it.   The doctors are positive that the cancer can be cured but it is still going to be a long fight. Unfortunately blogging is not a high priority at the moment but I will try to post once in a while.   I still have a few places to share that we visited in 2013.   Have a nice weekend. Lu-Gerda

Time has flown by.   More than 2 weeks have passed since my last post.   I have been busy at work and we did not do any traveling.   Winter also arrived in the Western Cape and we had a lot of rain and cold weather.   Every evening I want to snuggle under a blanket and relax.   Sitting at the computer to write was not a high priority. Here are some random photos from the last month. The cloudy weather makes beautiful sunrises.   I also spend some time in the garden during the last month.   We had this wall build to help with walls getting damp at the back of the house.   The retaining blocks seemed like a perfect place to plant some of herb and vegetable plants.   Emma enjoying the sunshine Another beautiful sunrise This was about 20:00 at work.   My desk was a mess from trying to complete a lot of different work before the 28 June deadline.   And everything was su...
