Day 3 : Munich Germany Cont (16 June 2008)

After visiting Hofbräuhaus, Max-Joseph-Platz and Odeonsplatz we continued with Mike’s Bike Tour of Munich:

White Rose Memorial
This is a monument for a group of students who formed the “White Rose Movement” and distributed leaflets against the Nazi’s during the Second World War. The members of the group was arrested and executed in 1943.
Hofgarten
We then had to go through the Hofgarten.  The garden for the palace was began in 1613 and was completed in 1617.  We were not allowed to ride the bikes through the garden and had to get of and walk.  We walked pass the the hofgartentemple or Temple of Diana. 
Englischer Garten  & Beer garden
The Englischer Garten is a big park in Munich and in the park is the second largest beer garden in Germany with seets for 8000 people.  We rode our bikes pass the Eisbach or Ice stream with the artificial waterfall and also saw the Chinesisher Turm.  We stopped for a drink and something to eat in the beer garden.


















It started raining and we use our rain ponsho’s to keep dry.  On our way back we stopped to see the surfers in the river although there is a sign to forbid surfing and swimming.














We went back to the office of Mike’s Bike Tour to return the bikes at about 20:00.  We decided to see some more of Munich before returning to the hotel.  First we had to find a bank to get some cash and then we walked to the Marienplatz.

It was very busy because there was a Eurocup football match.  Marienplatz is very pretty.  The main attraction is the New Town Hall or Neues Rathaus built between 1867 and 1909.  We also saw the Mariensäule or Column of St Mary erected in 1638  with a 1590’s statue of the Virgin Mary on the top.

We walked pass the Old Town Hall or Altes Rathaus.  It was rebuilt after the Second World War following the original 15th century plans.

 

At about 20:30 we went to the Hofbräuhaus for some German beer.  We bought a beer each and received a huge mug with about 1 liter of beer in it.  We joined some people from our tour group and had a nice night.  Later we shared a cab back to the hotel with our tour guide and soon were ready for bed.

    What a lovely post! I really regret not going into the Englischer Garden on our trip there but we do want to go back to explore more of the WWII history anyway.

Dutch Reformed Mother Church, George

One of my favourite sights in George is the white Dutch Reformed Mother Church with the beautiful Outeniqua Mountain as background.   I have many memories of visiting this church: On a history class trip when I was about 10, for a art class when I was about 13, for my cousins wedding in 2004, for her baby’s christening a few years later and many other times.   But most of all I like seeing this church every time we drive through town.   The cornerstone for the church was laid on 14 April 1832.   Slaves were used for some of the building work like the digging of the six-foot deep by five-foot wide foundations.   Due to financial problems it took 12 years to complete the church and it was consecrated in 9 October 1842.  The church is a National Heritage Site. On 13 September 1905 disaster struck when the church tower collapsed.   The wood rotted from water damage and lead to the walls weakening.   After a lot of rain for two days the tower collapsed.   The tower was reb

Eyewitness Travel Guides – A Book Review

  Last month I wrote a book review and I enjoyed it.   Today I want to share some more of my favourite travel books.   DK Eyewitness Travel Guides I bought my first travel guide in 2008. I was planning a trip with my friend Lelanie to London and Europe.   While planning the trip I bought the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Europe and I paid R 282.00 for it.   Except for my university textbooks, this was the most expensive book I have ever bought for myself.    We were doing a Contiki Tour and visited 7 countries.   I studied the information in guide the about the cities we would visit.    I made lists of places I want to see and then looked for more information about them.   In the end I did not take the guide with me (the 800 pages was just to heavy to carry along) but packed all my lists to use.  At Departures at Cape Town Airport in 2008 My second guide was for the same trip.   The Eyewitness Travel Top 10 London traveled with us.   We stayed in London for 4 da
