Weekend in Swellendam

The last week was very busy.  Actually for more than a week it was crazy at work and busy at home.  Last weekend we did make some time to relax and to celebrate our one-year wedding anniversary.  We decided to spend the weekend in Swellendam.  It is only a two-hour drive from Mossel Bay and we could drive there Friday after work.
We booked a room at the Flametree Guesthouse for two nights and about 15:30 on Friday afternoon we were on our way.  There were a lot of road works between Mossel Bay and Albertinia.  Then we made a quick stop at Riversdale for some snacks and arrived in Swellendam at about 18:00.
We had some trouble to find the guesthouse (My mistake for misreading the directions) but eventually found it and checked in.  We were greeted first by the two dogs and then the owner.  We were staying in the Joy room, a beautiful room with high ceilings and wood floors.  Isabel, the owner, was very friendly and gave us great advise of places to eat in walking distance.
We decided on Mattsens Steakhouse.  It was a lovely autumn night and we decided to sit outside.  The table was under some trees with a lantern giving light and setting a great atmosphere.
The staff was friendly and service was good.  Our burgers arrived and it was huge.  I had a very good grilled chicken burger and my husband loved his ostrich burger.  After dinner we drove through town and then back to our room for an early night.
The next morning we had a great breakfast, fruit and yogurt followed by bacon, eggs and toast with coffee.  Isabel gave us some more advise of places to visit as well as some vouchers.  More about the town next time.

  1. Living in Mossel Bay you are very nicely situated to spend the weekend in a great number of places. Swellendam is another of those places I've been through many times but have never spent a lot of time.
